Election of Board Members

Four incumbents and three nominees were running for five positions on the board of directors.  Jeff Sawyer was re-elected and is still our 1st Vice President. Also re-elected were Al Dennis, Dale Peterson and Tom Smith.  Terry Meier was also elected to the board.

Al Davis was elected to fill the two year vacancy left by the resignation of Ray Balzer last year and Al is now our 2nd Vice President.

COGGINS PAPERS:

At the March 20th Board of Directors meeting it was decided by the Board that ALL horses on our rides must have a negative coggins test and you MUST show a copy to the trail boss.  If you show up on the ride without this paper, you will be asked to go home!  It was brought to our attention that a horse who attended most of the rides last year tested positive for E.I.A. (Equine Infectious Anemia)   There is no treatment or cure for E.I.A. and this animal had to be destroyed.  This horse was tested in March of 2004 and was negative.  The farm where the horse stayed was quarantined, all the other horses were checked and this was the only affected animal.

You can send a copy of your coggins paper in with your ride registration or just bring it with you when you come up.

K.I.S. (Keep It Simple); I get calls every spring asking if we will be having a caterer on the rides.  I have talked to John Timmons (proprietor of K.I.S. Kitchen) and he will be up on rides starting in June.  The May ride is usually small, so he probably won’t be up for that one.  He will be doing primarily lunches on the trail.  Dinners will be announced at nightly meetings.

Quality Inn, Houghton Lake, Michigan

Mullett Lake Work Bee - May 6, 7 & 8

We will be building our camp on the property donated by Alice Arnett.  You can bring your rig and camp on the new site.  PLEASE, NO HORSES.  Right now it is an open hay field.  We will be installing picket poles, so bring shovels, tampers and anything else you think of that might help.  A Bobcat will be used to drill the holes.  If you have any questions, please call Garry Randall 989-539-6838.

Mackinaw City Camp: When you arrive at our camp you will see some buildings being constructed across from the well, please stay out of this area.  This is a Historic Village and we have been asked not to go in this area.  If this is your first visit to Mackinaw Camp, please ask the trail boss where we are allowed to ride.  Don’t just take off; there are restricted areas where they do not want horses.

We need to respect their wishes so we don’t loose this camp!

Emergency Phone Numbers

The trail boss no longer has a telephone.  If you are on a trail ride and there is an emergency at home, instruct your family to call the county sheriff’s office in the appropriate county.  I have listed them, along with the Michigan State Police numbers, on this newsletter.
